To kill a mockingbird written by Harper Lee shows how the great depression in the early 1928 affected the education in society people in the Southerners. The drastic change started between the year 1930 and 1931. That was when the condition was the worst. Many students did not have the right clothing, supplies, and textbooks . The increase in cost were unbearable ,this had made the parents with no choice but to scrimp and save.
Due to lack of nutrients, schoolworks and the students progress started to drop. Students also did not pay their school fees and eventually the school had to close down. Not only that some poor families had to stop their children from going to school so that they can help them work so they can support the families financially. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird Scout describes the Ewell family, who only attends school the first day of each year . This is because of their lack in financial needs.
Teachers were also affected badly. Many teachers did not get their pays and as time goes by debts owned by the teachers worsen. The debts were over 20 million. Not only were sometimes they did not get their salary but their salary also were cut down.In the end many quit their job. Qualified male teachers during the Great Depression were very difficult to find and when they were hired their habits were very bad. For example they were frequently drunk. And also because teachers were not given their salary the qualified mans decided to doother jobs that give a better pay.People in Southern had a very hard life during that time .Due to many of this problems, quite a number of programs were organise in order to resolve the problems. however only some were successful.
